When an emergency strikes, every second matters. Imagine a loved one, a colleague, or even a stranger suddenly collapsing and becoming unresponsive — would you know what to do?
This is where CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) becomes one of the most critical life-saving skills anyone can have.
What Is CPR?
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed when someone’s heart stops beating or they stop breathing. It involves a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths to keep oxygenated blood flowing to vital organs until professional medical help arrives.
Performing CPR immediately can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. Without it, permanent brain damage or death can occur within just minutes.
Why CPR Knowledge Matters
Emergencies can happen anywhere and anytime — at home, work, or in public spaces. The most common situations that require CPR include:
Sudden cardiac arrest
Drowning incidents
Severe allergic reactions
Electrocution
Choking
In many cases, the first responder is not a paramedic or doctor — it’s an everyday person.
That’s why CPR knowledge is so valuable. Having the confidence to act quickly can bridge the gap between collapse and the arrival of emergency services, giving the victim the best possible chance of survival.
The Key Steps of CPR
While taking a formal CPR course is essential, here’s a simplified overview of what CPR involves:
Step-by-Step CPR Guide
Check for danger – Ensure the scene is safe for you and others.
Check for response – Tap the person’s shoulder and ask loudly, “Are you okay?”
Call for help – Dial 000 (or your local emergency number) and ask someone to bring an AED (defibrillator) if available.
Open the airway – Tilt the head back and lift the chin.
Check breathing – Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for up to 10 seconds.
Start chest compressions – Place your hands on the centre of the chest and push hard and fast (100–120 compressions per minute).
Give rescue breaths – If trained, give 2 breaths after every 30 compressions.
Continue CPR – Until help arrives, an AED is ready, or the person starts breathing normally.
